243rd Anniversary of the Battle of Blue Licks
In 1782 Native Americans clashed with Kentuckians at this site. Militia groups from the Kentucky settlements under Colonel John Todd, Colonel Stephen Trigg and Colonel Daniel Boone came together here. Troops under Benjamin Logan were expected the following day. While Boone cautioned waiting for Logan, others forced the issue to carry forward. They were met near the Licking River by British Colonel Caldwell and 50 Loyalists with his Indian Allies numbering about 300. The 100+ Kentuckians were ambushed as they climbed the hill. In less than 15 minutes 70 or more were killed. Many of Kentucky's early leaders lost their lives here.
Re-enactors gather each year to commemorate this on the battlefield and the Sons of the American Revolution commemorate it at the monument. Thanks to the staff of Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort park for this event.
