Although a bit of a different era than our usual photos, Steamboats actually began plying the Ohio River in 1811. Over the years they were a common site on the Ohio and Mississippi. Can you imagine early settlers hearing the whistle of an arriving boat and later the calliopes, run by the steam of the engine. It must have been an incredible site because it still fascinates today.
